I'm looking to buy a pair of monitors next month. I've always used 21" CRT displays, but they're friggin' huge and I'm afraid a pair of 'em will go right through the floor.
On the other hand, the price/performance ratio of flat screens doesn't seem worth it, plus having 21" screens has spoiled me for anything smaller.
As artists, which kind of display do you like best, especially how the screen image matches a printout?

If it was up to me I would go for LCD. I have CRT now but I like the flatness and design of a LCD monitor much better. But they are much more expensive too.

I have one of each.
My LCD has better colour matching although the CRT has a higher quality picture.
If you do go for LCD's remember to check the 'stuck' pixel section of the guarantee before you buy, if possible. If you do have a 'stuck' pixel as soon as you open the box, you may not be entitled to an exchange/refund as this could be deemed to be within the industry's 'acceptable' limits.

i would go with the crt. size is always a bonus and ya it kinda sucks that they are so heavey and i know better than most i use to lug my huge ass crt's to all of my video shows with a ton of other gear, but how offten are you planing on moving it, i never saw a true reason to get a smaller monitor or a lap top, give me balls out , huge ass gear anyday, its always better and i use to show up at every show with hundreds of pounds of gear. for me it always boiled down to price i could buy three to four times the screen size on a crt for the same on a plasma or lcd and thats a fact. that dosent even get in to tech stuff like refresh rates or tearing or dead pixls which is a real pain in the ass i dont know if you know what im talking about but all lcd manufactuars have an acceptable dead pixle ratio and its out-landish. my freind had a huge line (inch and half) of dead pixles on his monitor and it looked horable but according to the manufactuare it was just fine. get two huge crts like me hell do me one better get three.

I'll prob go with a pair of 19", big price drop from 21" for only a 3" diff.
I just hope my girlfriend doesn't read your post and starts thinking bigger is better.

As soon as the more high-end LCD's reach a reasonable price level, I'll probably be swiping one (or two).
Pro:
+ takes up much less space
+ lighter
+ no distortions, completely flat
+ generates less heat
+ looks much slicker
Con:
- bloody damn expensive
- high res screens are especially costly
- risk of dead pixels
- colour's alledgedly not up to par with CRT, but hell, I don't do print anyway
- fixed resolution (yes, you can switch, but that leads to loss of quality)
- did I mention they're bloody damn expensive?

You want the largest screen you can afford with a screen resolution no smaller than
1280x 1024..LCDs are nice on space but resolution max at 1600 x 1200 and they are costly..CRT are inexpensive and the resolutions are much greater then LCDs..Viewsonic has a CRT that color matches to print (what color is on the screen is what you will have once printed).. I think I'm gonna go with a pair of 19" ViewSonics CRTs. Seem to be the best bang-for-the-buck.

im no artist but i have a 17" SAMSUNG LCD and i think its awesome. i'll never go back to CRT even if it did cost me 400$. I like having the desk space that i never had before.

Hey all
I use a ViewSonic UltraBrite A90f+ 19"... It is GREAT! the ultrabrite mode brings up the contrast so much that it is perfect for doing graphic work. I got it from Best Buy about 2 years ago for about 400 - 350.. i cant remember the price.. But.. ViewSonics are worth it.. I worked at a computer shop.. and ViewSonics are the best monitors on the market...
As far as CRT's or LCD's... CRT's for graphic work LCD's for office work.. U cant compare the quality that a crt has to a lcd i think.. i mean LCD's can be good graphic monitors.. but why would u sell your car to get one that can give u the quality u want. A Crt will give u quality and be so much better priced.... like 4x in price difference...
As far as laptops go.. If u want to get a laptop for graphic work.. I could not more strongly recommend the "Sagar" company... they have the best laptops i have ever seen. They are 1. the most powerful on the market. - "if u want evidence go to ""futuremark.com"" and check out what the best rated laptops are. Last i knew my best friend "phelptwan" was the top laptop holder. I still believe he is today as well." 2. they have the best screens on the market.. If it doesnt seem to float your boat though check out the "Acer Ferrari" the 2nd best on the market i think..

I've got a Sony SDM-93Black on my desk. A 19" TFT screen. And I must say TFT has problems which CRT doesn't has like ghosting and stuff. But if you ask me it's all worth because TFT is so much better.
