In my opinion the reason for commenting on someone's work is either because you really enjoyed the particular piece or you have suggestions for what you think may help the artist and give him or her your opinion. In either case, both require comments longer than 3 or 5 words in length such as "Cool design!" or "Awesome work on this!" If you like the piece then at least tell the artist what you liked about it in two or three sentences.
You don't have to be artistic or knowledgeable to explain what you did or did not like about a piece. Hell, you don't even really have to know what you're talking about, but at least show that you have a reason for leaving a comment other than raising your points to up your level rating. This is called "Point Tweaking" and last I heard the admins frowned upon it and even adjusted the points of any member found doing it.
The point system is designed to encourage member participation, but when I see blatantly obvious and consistent point tweaking in the one and two word comments, I wonder if participation is really even worth it. I'm not ragging on those who occassionally comment with one or so words (I mean I even do it occassionally). I'm mainly addressing anyone who consistently does it just for points sakes.
Am I being anal or does this irk anyone else but me?

for me it's hard to explain what I think of gfx cause my english is not to good/ anywayz, you got a point here but sometimes it's nice to know that people think ur art is cool or awesome.

Liquidd, mate long time no seeing. What can I say. I brought this discussion up ages ago. I can only say one thing. I totally agree with you. Sometimes I will place shorter comments however. Not for tweaking my points but just to show interest in works made by artist who I track.

Sometimes it's hard to tell if it's the lingo barrier they have that they do this or time restrictions that they do this or don't feel they want to struggle w/ an in depth explanation of why they like it since most of us are not pro critics and then sometimes it's simply a kid doing it to push their points up.
All I can really say is that if it's the later usually kids bore alil easier and they get tired and leave by themselves right when you want to go spank them. hehe
but yes I know this irritates quite a few ppl when they see this. either way I think 1 or 20 words usually pumps up the artist a lil bit jussss as long as it's not a "you suck I bet your momma does art better than you!" remark...

I have to agree on all points above... commenting on EVERYTHING is hugely annoying to me if it's just for points, it's not like we're giving a million dollars away as a reward or anyhting.

what are points?? Just numbers??? And a pic before your name? I wouldn't see the point in commenting for points cause what can you actually do with them???? I comment cause I like seeing other people stuff and when I take a look I always comment! For example check my DA account I commented about 6000 times on artworks and DA doesn't give points for comments so what's with the points? Can you exchange them for money???

uranium - Glad that you agree with my point. Your english is fine, man. It doesn't take fancy words (or even good english for that matter) to say what you like about a piece. If you like the colors you could say "Pretty cool colors! They look great together and are really nice to look at. I like this piece alot!"
That's alot better than simply saying "Awesome!"
stev - Hey steVo, how's it hanging, man? Yeah, I post short comments occassionally too and there isn't anything wrong with it if it's done in moderation. But it just bugs me to see someone with over a hundred comments which all have less than five words.
doreen - I agree with you on most of what you said, dor. I, myself, have time restrictions which limit my participation. And yes, I also agree about not wanting to go into an in depth explanation sometimes, but I don't think a language barrier is any excuse to post over a hundred comments less than 5 words in length. Most people who don't speak english very well donot comment THAT often even if they do like the artwork.
I'm not saying that people should type out long explanations about what they like about a piece or be overly critical, I'm just saying that 3 words does not a comment make, no matter how many times a person types them in over and over and over again.
But you're right, it's usually just kids. And sometimes an impairment can prevent someone from typing decent comments on all the artwork that person enjoys viewing.
tirzah - Well said, tirz! Oh wait, so you all AREN'T giving away a million dollars for points? *sigh* Ah well, it's been nice knowing you all. No point in sticking around here any more
uranium - You just wrote an entire paragraph on how you feel about this topic . Explaining gfx isn't any different. No need to be fancy, no need to use "art" words. Just mention what you like about the piece in a sentence or two. Simple.
