Artist's Comment: This is a painting that was meant to be part of a sort of modern version of "The Steadfast Soldier". Except the ballerina is actually Ballerina Barbie, and the little guy with the little bayonet became GI Joe. However, that idea was never realized, for one reason or another. But I shall share the story with you.
GI Joe lost his leg in The Sandbox War of 1996. He was quite young then, and the loss of his appendege was a great shock to the barely-out-of-the-box toy. Since that day, he never felt like he fit in with the rest. An outsider, he was constantly looking for someone just like him. And then, she came. From the second she emerged from her bright pink box he knew he had found his soul mate. Many a day he spent marveling at her great beauty neither eating, nor drinking (but then again, he was plastic). But his happiness would not last long. He would wake up one morning to find his precious love decapitated by the Evil Brother. Unable to cope, he committed suicide by throwing himself to the dreaded Fifi Monster. He was instantly mauled to death.
