Part 7
August 3rd, 1884 3:30 pm
Like I said, I would describe what we found at the bottom of this new depth... How do I begin... A vast and bottomless looking hole in the earth! After we rappelled to the bottom of the drop we found ourselves at the gigantic opening to what the Indian Guide told us was the beginning of the great and terrible cave; the true cave that we have come all this way to explore....
At the time I am writing this the rest of the Men have settled to camp... even though it is midday of August 3rd, the strength of which we have expended having come all this way, through cave and depth, has tired us all. we will rest here, for maybe the night, and then we shall begin the main portion of our journey... But first, we will move on into about 1 mile into the cave, so we can be further in our quest, but most importantly... be in the beginning midst of our main exploration.
August 3rd, 1884 7:34 pm
The rest of the men are resting right now. I cannot rest... I am too excited about our quest, now that we are in the middle of the beginning of the main cave. I will try to sleep now. Hopefully we can resume the journey at about midnight tonight...
Part 8
August 3rd, 1884 10:56 pm
James has woken me to tell me of something he saw; maybe something he has dreamed... He woke me and said he saw a "shadow" moving in the darkness behind us! We have settled into camp to sleep the night, our lamps dim, casting shadows of their own, but he said 'this shadow moved against the lamp shadows'... James said he was sleeping and awoke due to a noise he heard, a noise of something shuffling in the darkness. The he said he saw a silhouette of something manlike moving amongst the walls of the cave, like it was watching us. Then this shadow fled into the darkness. That was when James woke me to tell. I said to him, "Go back to sleep, my friend, you have been dreaming and this atmosphere is getting to you". He looked at me like I was only half right then reluctantly laid back down to sleep. I don't know if he is really resting at this moment, but I am laying my journal down to continue my sleep. I must keep this group together... we must not let the darkness get the better of us...

How do I begin this?
I will tell it as it happened...
I was awoken again by James. As I opened my eyes I saw his face, pale and Frightened! I sat up, finding out that not only was James awake, but that Jonathan was awake also. Both James and Jonathan were quietly frantic, telling me that they both saw a "shadow" watching us from the darkness! The shuffling that James said he heard earlier occurred once again, but waking both of them this time. They said they looked into the darkness, unaware the other was even awake, and saw a shape move just out of lantern range. They both gasped and realized each other witnessed this together. That is when the woke me.
Since two of the Men said they saw and heard this I figured I should investigate. I reached for a lantern, picked it up and began to turn up the fire when out of the corner of my eye I noticed a shifting of shadow along a far wall of the cave!
James and Jonathan were both in a frightened stasis. I told them to stay put while I went to see what this "shadow" was. I made my way towards the far wall where I had seen the movement, the sound of water dripping in the echoing distance, that constant and ever humming evil wind surrounding me... I saw once again a shape move away just out of lantern range! I progressed, my heartbeat racing in my chest, sweat beginning to form over my entire body... I tell you I was scared! Scared to living Death! I thought, some foul creature is stalking us, and that now it was just playing a game with me, staying just out of lantern reach, waiting for me to corner myself before it decided to strike and take me down! Through my terror I moved forward and shouted "Stop!". Why that word came to me I do not know, but I shouted it anyway. I heard it echo through the cave, behind me the sound of the men rustling, the others who were sleeping jolting awake at my call. I shone the lantern light to the left and right, seeking the elusive shadow. I spoke then, in a calm voice, even through my terror, "Who are you... Why are you following us?"
Silence... and then... crying.
"who are you?" I said once again. I lifted the lantern and saw the shadow suddenly drop along the wall, as if crouching, and the sound of crying... a man crying. I moved forward, the "shadow" remaining crouched and as my light came across it I said, "Oh, my God!"
It was Coren!
