Artist's Comment: It's a shame I had to delete the original submission of this short story. But, at 294 downloads I felt someone had linked this story to another site and was claiming it as their own (ripping). Its also a shame because this was one of my highlighted works and had received so many great comments, but I still want it here on AU for all the ppl to enjoy. So I re-submit it, and hope it is re-read and re-enjoyed Dear Readers...

When I was between the ages of 15 to 21, me and my friend, Dennis Aloisio wrote over 100 short stories. Dennis and I drifted apart over the years and I recently found out he died.
This is the first short story I have written in nearly 15 years... and the first I have ever written without Dennis.
I hope you enjoy it...

A Short Note from a Vampire and His Cat
I am a Vampire.
I am going to live forever.
Do you understand?
I saw a movie once, it was called 'Near Dark'. It was about Vampires. I bring this one up because a Vampire girl made a statement that rings the truest of all.
She says, while she is talking to a human who is wondering about the mystery that surrounds her... she says:
(pointing up to the night sky at a bright star) "Do you see that star?"
"Yes"
"The light coming from that star will take a Million years to reach earth... And the funny thing is, is that when that light reaches here, I will still be alive..."
It struck me, the truth of those words; even though they were in a silly film made by a human, the Vampire reality of the lines...
If I live, if what they say is true of us, then the stars I see at night, my precious night, my time, then I will see the light of those stars, millions of light years distant, I will see that light reach me... and you will not.
I say this only as introduction... You must know, as humans (I was human once, so very long ago), that we are here... here and forever. I respect you; your short lives, your loves, your beautiful and meaningless trodding through time... to me, it is beautiful. I may meet you one night, silent and unforgiving and give you the quiet death you all desire, but I will, at once, shed a tear of mourning at your death; shed it because if the legends are true, I will never be given the bliss of dying.
I envy the death you are allowed, by me, or by other means...
My so called "life" is a curse... Can you understand the torture of living forever while everyone you love dies! Your family, sister, father... lovers... They age and become fragile things before your very eyes! Do you know what it is like to watch you Mother grow old... To become the victim of human ailing? To get human diseases, Cancer, and just DIE!
After I was made a Vampire, I literally disappeared from my mortal life, separating myself from my mortal relationships, hiding is shadow, watching everyone I loved grow old, diseased, fragile and thus Die... This is a pain I wish upon none of you...
But... for the oddest reason, even though I could allow my human loves to take the course of life to death, I could not, for some reason, allow my pet to take the path of natural existence and die...
My precious pet, a cat, whom I had named Oliver (after the famous orphan of literature). Black and sleek and always by my side while I was human. I wept more for his short life than anyone, even my own Mother! I could not imagine a life, especially a life that lasted forever, any kind of life without him.
I thought over what I wanted to do for a long time. I lived, whatever life you may concider this, pondering my cat's life, for seven years. Me, Immortal; Oliver, aging with the swiftness that cats do...
I couldn't bear any existance without him... The torture upon me like nothing you could imagine.
Would it work? How would he survive if it did work? No! I must not! Yes, I have no choice; I would want to Die without him!
So... I turned him, a cat! I bit and drank of Olivers blood. I drained my beautiful comapanion... He was so weak in my hands, so afraid as he scratched and clawed me in fear.
I could feel his thoughts! 'Why was I doing this to him, I was his protector! He loved me as I loved him, WHY! WHY! WHY!'
The tears flowed as I experienced Oliver's fear and confusion. But I knew he would forgive me. He may not fully comprehend the new life I was going to give him, but he would forgive me. I was his and he was mine and this event would pass from his short, animal memory, and all he would remember was our love.
I drained him to near death. His small and fragile heartbeat barely remaining as I bit my own wrist, drawing a flow of immortal blood and poured it into his small and beautiful mouth...
The blood filled his throat and he instinctually drank of it...
My heart broke as his green eyes looked into mine, his mortal cat body dying as his immortal body came to life.
Why was I doing this! Why! I loved him so much...
My beautiful Oliver died... And my beautiful Oliver was reborn!
This is the end of my confession to you, dear humans... wonderful and sad as you are, this is the end...
I feed upon you, not nightly like the old fictions tell you, but on nights when the stars are bright, and I wait for their distant light to reach me; nights when the moon is guardian; I welcome you into my home. And as I drink of you, your beautiful and short lives sinking into my arms... I always save the very last of your blood for my black, sleek and immortal cat, Oliver...
