Thanks to betina, tirzah, and (of course) my fellow-newbie, prplflwr20.
The glassy effect was achieved with a Lacquer plugin made by Sandwater (now defunct -- Flaming Pear bought 'em out and "improved" it to the point that I won't use their version) and it turned a Chaoscope "gauzy" fractal into something I liked. I'm still learning CGI stuff, been trying to learn it for about a year now, so any critiques, suggestions, tips, etc., would be most appreciated.
