Artist's Comment: History
Coventina was an ancient, Celtic goddess best known in Britain, where she was actively worshipped during the period of Rome's occupation in the country. Her primary function was a goddess of protection and success over the waters--over rivers, streams, and wells. Most apparently associated her with England's Caldew River and its protection.
There was a Romano-Celtic temple built in her name in Carrawburgh, Northumberland; it was associated with the Roman fort of Brocolitia due to its architecture and design. Many people came to give offerings to this goddess in this temple, and some 13 or 14,000 Roman coins were found in the temple's sacred wells, most from the Roman Gratian's reign (407 AD). Other offerings, including beads, glass, pottery, and even the occasional human skull were found. Much of this worship took place during the struggling powers between the Christian and pagan eras, thus probably the reason behind the influx of worship at certain periods in history.
Coventina is an interesting goddess with a somewhat mysterious past. In some architectural sculptures, she is depicted as a single deity, while in others she is shown as a three-in-one goddess, a goddess made up of three water nymphs. It is hard to say--impossible to say--what she truly was or how great her importance was to the people beyond her primary functions.
Though little is known of Coventina today, she must have had somewhat of a large following. Traces of her existence and variations of her are found in Britain, Scotland, and Celtic Gaul.
Details
This is an oil painting done on 30x24" stretched canvas. I believe, all total, it took six or seven hours to complete. I tried to keep a balance between realism and the classic, ancient styles of goddess depictions.

I'm particularly impressed by the composition of your painting.
I'm familiar with the subject, but I was fascinated by your very interesting and well-researched notes.
