Artist's Comment: [picture inspired by House Of Flying Daggers, the story below i came up with at my job while i was supposed to be working. Edit: A couple of minor changes were made as suggested by [thn007]. Anyway...]
Her parents abandoned her soon after birth, left her at the edge of the forest.
"She's possessed", they claimed, but in reality they had wanted only a boy. "What use is a girl," they said, "she won't be able to take care of us in our old age. Better to try again, and hopefully the gods will smile on us the next time. May they bless us with a boy. Yes, may they bless us with a boy."
The demon spirits of the forest watched over the little girl. They raised her, fed her the flesh of beasts and the flesh of men, of lonely travellers, of wandering traders...and of children that strayed too far away from their parents.
When the time came, the spirits killed one of their own and infused the little girl with the soulforce of the sacrificed demon.
She became one of them, yet not quite.
They named her Scrye, and charged her with the care of their domain until time's end. Guardian she was made and Guardian she remained, ever vigilant against the intrusion of outsiders into the domain of her demon overlords...
Centuries passed, violent feuds arose amongst the forest demons, and they slowly killed each other off. Scrye was once again orphaned, her adopted 'family' having wiped each other out.
Loosed of the demons' grip and freed of her fealty, Scrye wandered about the forest, lost. One day she suddenly found herself at the edge, and her long dormant human urges re-surfaced. The unknown called to her...
Steeling herself, for the first time in hundreds of years, she prepared to step out into the open...
