the displayed image is far to large to view all at once (1024x768 is plenty large), but again, the focus is soft and you have a huge hot spot of lost info on the images left side. With digital you really have to be careful of blown highlight (over exposure). You really should have metered for the lit side of your face and then adjusted your exposure based on that reading. Actually use the histogram display... it can be your best friend for exposures. And I have a question... are you using the digital zoom? If so don't... that could be the reason for the images being out of focus or soft and filled with digital noise.
