Artist's Comment: This is an adaption of a character design I did for a publication in 2003. Originally, there was only the beast. Over the past 3 days I have touched him up and added the environment. It took about 20 hours.
I was trying to incorporate some polarities in this piece, like near and far, light and dark and rough and smooth. Perspective was also a goal, specifically to get the distant hills to seem, well, in the distance....
This piece has a companion illustration that I have yet to complete, but basically it's the object attached to the beast by those ropes. It will be set in a dark forest (what a suprise) that you have a glimpse of there on the edge.
I don't think my scan picked up all the detail I put into this very well, but you get the idea. Thanks for viewing!
This is 99% ink and some charcoal for the big shadow and some touchups...
