President Barack Obama isn't pulling any punches about the loss of two top nominees to his team because of tax problems -- and he's blaming himself.
Obama said flat out on CNN "I screwed up." And he said it several times to various news media representatives from the Oval Office. The setting showed Obama in the very seat of power as he owned up to mistakes on a rocky day.
Normally the picture of calm and confidence, Obama performed mea culpas in a series of TV interviews following Tom Daschle's withdrawal from consideration as health and human services secretary. Obama also lost his pick for federal spending watchdog. Both bowed out over tax problems.
The president says he was slow to recognize the double standard obvious to ordinary Americans who are cut no slack if they fall behind on their taxes.
