It's just closed enough to solve the plot questions, and just open enough to let the reader keep it going in their head and imagine what really happens to Bryan and Karen. Her playing the cello and the symbolism for his lack of notice of things that are so important to her lead you to believe that what Bryan says about the future probably isn't true. As a girl whose been burned, it makes me want to reach out and shake Karen for not noticing Bryan's distance.
